Pediatric Oncology is a specialised branch of oncology dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care of cancers in children and adolescents, from infancy through young adulthood. Childhood cancers are biologically distinct from adult cancers and require specialised, age-appropriate, and compassionate care. The primary goals are to cure cancer, minimise long-term side effects, and ensure normal growth, development, and quality of life.

What cancers are treated

Common childhood cancers include leukemias, lymphomas, brain and spinal cord tumors, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor (kidney cancer), bone tumors (osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma), soft tissue sarcomas, retinoblastoma, and germ cell tumors.

Why pediatric oncology is unique

Childhood cancers often have high cure rates, and long life expectancy makes long-term safety critical. The field requires specialised expertise and infrastructure, and emphasises healing the child, not just treating cancer.
