Surgical Oncology is a specialised branch of oncology focused on the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of cancer through surgery. It plays a central and often decisive role in cancer care, especially for early-stage and locally advanced tumors, where complete removal of the tumor can lead to cure.

How surgical oncology works

Cancer surgery aims to remove the primary tumor completely with adequate margins, assess and remove regional lymph nodes for accurate staging, reduce tumor burden to enhance outcomes of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and relieve symptoms such as obstruction, bleeding, or pain. Surgery is carefully planned using modern imaging and pathology to ensure maximum tumor clearance with minimal functional loss.

Reconstructive and palliative surgery

Reconstructive and oncoplastic surgery is performed to restore form and function after cancer removal, including breast oncoplastic surgery, head and neck reconstruction, limb-sparing surgery, and microvascular flap reconstruction. Palliative surgery is used to relieve symptoms in advanced cancer, such as bowel obstruction relief, bleeding control, pain reduction, and improving nutrition and comfort.

Precision, safety, and quality

Modern surgical oncology emphasises preoperative planning with CT, MRI, and PET, image-guided and navigation-assisted surgery, intraoperative frozen section analysis, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, and strict infection control and safety standards.
